leaving three people dead and dozens of Dalit's homes torched

These were precisely the kind of incidents that had cost the Samajwadi
Party its government in Uttar Pradesh in 2007.

Rampant sporadic violence in the aftermath of the party's stunning
victory this year is fuelling speculation of a return to the lawless
days in the Hindi heartland state.

At least three persons have died and dozens of Dalit's houses were
torched in incidents of violence across the state during the past 36
hours - several involving SP workers.

SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav was quick to caution his partymen that if
they will not maintain discipline, it will malign the image of the
party.

'If you people don't maintain discipline, you will not be able to make
me Prime Minister in future.

'We had worked very hard to win the assembly elections. So please
don't do anything which maligns the government,' he told his
supporters in Saifai on Thursday.

Mulayam also met chief secretary Anup Kumar Mishra and DGP Brij Lal to
review the situation.
Akhilesh Yadav said the riots were caused by people angered by the SP's win

He had called the two officials to the SP headquarters here. Akhilesh
Yadav, state president of the party and a strong CM contender, said it
was conspiracy by the persons who have been swept away by his party in
the polls and some officials loyal to the BSP.

'No one from the Samajwadi Party (SP) is involved in these
incidents.... You can get it verified from your own sources as well...
but if anyone from the party is found involved, stern action would be
taken against them, however strong they might be,' Akhilesh said.

The day SP was declared victorious in the polls some SP workers beat
up journalists in Jhansi and damaged their equipment.

The spiral of violence started then is yet to subside. Some members of
the Yadav and Bind community set ablaze the houses of Nats at
Makdumpur village in Sant Ravidas Nagar district on Thursday night.

The hut of Khushboo, a woman, where Congress general secretary Rahul
Gandhi had halted for some time on November 2, 2011, was also burnt.

'I was attacked and my house was set on flames last night because I
didn't vote for the SP,' Khushboo alleged.

Over a dozen Dalit's houses were also torched at Bhambia village in
Sitapur district on Thursday.

Locals claimed that it was done by some people who were celebrating
SP's victory.

A rice mill owned by former minister Ram Achal Rajbhar was also burnt
down in Sammanpur area of Ambedkar Nagar after a clash between the BSP
and the SP workers.

Neeraj Rai, Sammanpur SHO has been suspended for dereliction of duty.
Two men were killed in firing in Naini area of Allahabad while in
Agra's Mansukhpur, Munna Lal, a BSP-supported village chief was killed
on Wednesday night. Villagers claimed that the killers were SP
workers.

On Tuesday, a child had been killed in celebratory firing by the SP
workers in Sambhal. In Firozabad, a youth died of bullet injuries
during a clash between supporters of a defeated SP candidate and
police.
