Mayawati was rejected for elephantine misgovernance: UP Samajwadi
Party President Akhilesh Yadav

Victory has many friends and Akhilesh Yadav knows it only too well.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) Uttar Pradesh unit president says he knows
his friend from his foe. He says he doesn't want to be carried away by
this triumph. Instead, the Samajwadi Party will focus on delivering
good governance. Yadav spoke to ET . Excerpts:

What is your message to the people of Uttar Pradesh?

I want to thank the people of my state for their love, and for voting
beyond caste. The people of Uttar Pradesh have not only voted out
India's most corrupt regime, but they have also reacted against an
ineffective government at the Centre led by Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh and the first family of the party.

What is your promise to potential investors?

We want to promise them a hassle-free atmosphere. To all those who
want to invest in the state, my appeal to both individuals and
corporates is that Uttar Pradesh needs more investment and we will
make everything conducive for them. We assure them absolutely normal
law and order situation and easy acquisition of land.

Any other plans to boost the state's economy?

Like I said last time, we will work towards creating robust economies
in each district in the state (In an interview in the run-up to the
polls, Akhilesh had told ET: "Moradabad, as you know, is known for its
brass industry, Agra for finished leather products and so on. Each
district has an economy and there is a lot of tradition associated
with it... We will facilitate these small and medium industries to
grow.")

Why do you say that the people of Uttar Pradesh have voted beyond caste?

People of the state are now convinced that we represent and stand for
the whole of the state, and not just for socalled traditional vote
base. We are for the development of Uttar Pradesh, and we are for
people cutting across caste and community lines of the state.

But your traditional vote bank remains the Muslims and the Yadavs.

We have gone beyond that. We have successfully got others also to back
us. This victory proves that.

How do you respond to former Samajwadi Party man-turned Congress
leader Beni Prasad Verma's comment that he prefers the Bahujan Samaj
Party to SP?

These are people I don't want to take seriously. These are loudmouths
who have no say in the making of the next government. They are highly
frustrated people and I have nothing more to say about them. I wish
them well anyway.

Congress had tried to woo the Muslims, but failed at it. Will you be
allocating additional quota in jobs to the Muslims?

Loud statements by Congress leaders offering additional quota for the
Muslims made no impact (he doesn't want to name Union minister Salman
Khurshid).... The new government will immediately implement the
recommendations of the (Rajinder) Sachar Committee Report (which
studied the backwardness of the Indian Muslims). We will implement the
recommendations to the extent it is possible for us.

Do you expect any such move to create a rift within your traditional vote base?

No. We will factor in everything before going ahead with the
implementation of the recommendations.

What do you expect your position in the state Cabinet to be?

Netaji ( Mulayam Singh Yadav) will be the chief minister. The rest,
the party will decide.
