Rahul attacks Mayawati's UP shining campaign, mocks BSP

AMBEDKARNAGAR Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Thursday
questioned Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Mulayam Singh Yadav's commitment
to Muslim groups and charged chief minister Mayawati with living under
the false impression that "Uttar Pradesh was shining".

"Mulayam Singh Yadav says that reservation given to Muslims by the
Congress is not adequate. He himself has been the chief minister of
the state three times but did nothing on this front and when Rashid
Masood raised this matter he was shown the door", Rahul said.

"Mulayam says that he will give 28 per cent quota. The Supreme Court
has said that this was not possible but he keeps saying that he would
give it. He thinks that people understand nothing", he said.

"Mulayam promises to provide power, water and quota and think that
people would know nothing, though he makes promises but when it is
time to fight for the rights of the people he does nothing", Rahul
said.

On Mayawati, Rahul said that she was living under the false impression
that Uttar Pradesh was shining.

"When Maywati became the chief minister, her officials told her that
she is doing a lot of good work and so there is no need for her to
meet farmers, labourers or to go to villages as Uttar Pradesh was
shining".

The Congress leader said that the country's biggest shortcoming was
that leaders did not come to the people.

"They make promises and then forget all about them", he said.

As Rahul continues in his attempts to win an upper hand in Uttar
Pradesh polls, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) is playing up the
tie-up between Rahul and his once rival, Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD)
leader Ajit Singh.

They held their first joint rally in Meerut on Thursday.

As thousands of men, women and children packed into the Ramlila
Ground, Rahul made only one promise: his party "would listen to the
voice of the people if voted to power." Ajit Singh supported job
quotas for the backward Muslims, calling it "social justice".
