Ambedkar museum: A tribute to the legend

Located on Senapati Bapat road, Ambedkar museum was set up in the
memory of the legendry freedom fighter and writer of constitution of
free India, Babasaheb Ambedkar. The museum showcases the different
stages of his life right from his birth to death.

Inaugurated in 1996, the belongings of Babasaheb Ambedkar were donated
to the museum by his wife. The wide collection of items used by the
legend is well displayed and lets you peep in his life. A philosopher,
economist, anthropologist and Buddhist activist, Babasaheb played a
key role during the independence struggle.

Ambedkar museum is a popular spot among archaeologist, tourists and
researchers. Done in a huge dome style and painted in white and light
shade of blue, one can't miss this historical monument that pops out
on the busy street. Surrounded by thick greenery, the dome appears
very pleasant to the eye.

The museum is maintained by Symbiosis institute. Enriched with
numerous articles the museum narrates the life of the legend. Among
the various items displayed at the museum include his walk clock,
paper weight carved with his name, violin, night lamp, dining table
and chairs, travel accessories, footwear, gardening tools, cap and
clothes. Other articles also include utensils, pens, books and his
bed. The silver ink bottle presented to him by the then governor
general of India Lord Mount Batten is also preserved at the museum.
The museum also depicts the way Babasaheb was laid on the bed when he
breathed his last.  The Bharat Ratna awarded to him by President
Venkatraman is also displayed at the museum.  It also displays few
letters addressed to and written by him. Old photographs of Babasaheb
Ambedkar at important events are also exhibited.

The museum is a humble way of paying tribute to the legend. It is open
from 8 am to 5:30 pm. There is a nominal entry fee and camera is
strictly prohibited. Photographs and booklets are up for sale at the
counter.

In 4 years, Maya drops 13 'tainted' ministers
Oct 08, 2011 - Amita Verma |

Age Correspondent

UP chief minister Mayawati has created a record of sorts by dropping
the maximum number of ministers in her four-and-a half-year tenure.

Ms Mayawati, till date, has dropped 13 ministers from her council of
ministers for reasons ranging from corruption to involvement in crime
and other such allegations.
Her predecessors Mulayam Singh Yadav and Rajnath Singh had dropped two
ministers each while Kalyan Singh could not go beyond dropping five
ministers in his tenure.
One of the first ministers to be dropped in the Mayawati government
was Sudhir Goyal.
Mr Goyal, who was information minister, was asked to resign within
weeks of being sworn in and sources claimed that he had made
unjustified demands on his department and, hence, invited action.
Anand Sen Yadav, a Cabinet minister was asked to put in his papers
after he was found to be involved in the abduction and murder of his
pregnant girlfriend in Faizabad.
Jamuna Prasad Nishad (now deceased) was shown the door when he created
mayhem at a police station and firing by his supporters led to the
death of a constable.
R.P. Sankhawar was given marching orders when he was found to be
involved in a drug purchase scam. State minister Vidya Choudhury was
also removed following complaints.
Ashok Dohre was removed from the council of ministers for his alleged
misconduct while K.K. Gautam was dumped for "party reasons".
On the recommendation of the Lokayukta, the chief minister has so far
removed four ministers.
They include Rajesh Tripathi, Avadh Pal Singh Yadav, Badshah Singh and
Ranganath Misra.

'Dalit candidates will be given protection'
PTI | 09:10 PM,Oct 07,2011

Madurai,Oct 7 (PTI): Dalit candidates contesting the village
president's post at Keerpatti panchayat, where caste Hindus opposed it
about five years ago, could campaign without fear and they would be
provided adequate protection, officials said. A day after President of
the Keeripatti Panchayat R Baluchamy alleged he was prevented from
campaigning by caste Hindus, officials claimed all candidates of the
reserved panchayat had been given proper protection and the situation
there was being closely monitored. Superintendent of Police Asra Garg
said 10 policemen would give protection to candidates, if they sought
for it. Some caste hindus however said they were not against Dalits
and opposed Baluchamy contesting as his performance was not
satisfactory and that he was just spreading rumours. Baluchamy claimed
he had stopped campaigning yesterday after getting oral threats from
some caste Hindus. Meanwile four other Dalit candidates said not all
caste Hindus were against them and that those of Left parties were
fully backing them. Revenue and police officials said Baluchamy had
been given a police escort and there was no threat to him.

Nurse missing case: SC/ST org submits petition to Gehlot

Jodhpur, Oct 6 (PTI) An organisation for SC/STs today submitted a
petition to Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot seeking dismissal of
minister Mahipal Maderna for his alleged involvement in the Bhanwari
Devi missing case.

Members of All India Confederation of SC/ST Organisations also sought
the dismissal of police officers who had failed to solve the case.

Gehlot met the delegation at the Circuit House here.

The activists threatened to intensify their agitation if the case was
not taken to its logical conclusion.

Various factions of SC/ST communities have been staging sit-ins and
taking out rallies for the past one month demanding sacking of the
state water resource minister.

Divisional President of Confederation, Chaturaram Deshbandhu alleged
that the police action so far was nothing less than an eye wash.

"She (Devi) has been missing for over a month now but the efforts of
the entire machinery is to save the big names surfaced in this episode
instead of expediting efforts to trace her," Deshbandhu alleged.

[ZESTCaste] Divide and Rule. That is Maya’s Mantra

http://tehelka.com/story_main50.asp?filename=Ne151011Divide.asp

From Tehelka Magazine, Vol 8, Issue 41, Dated 15 Oct 2011
CURRENT AFFAIRS
UTTAR PRADESH

Divide and Rule. That is Maya's Mantra

Mayawati's creation of new districts is a political game that serves
no productive end, reports Virendra Nath Bhatt
Political theatre Announcements are usually made in huge rallies to gain mileage

Political theatre Announcements are usually made in huge rallies to gain mileage

MAYAWATI IS back at her old game: bifurcation of districts. On 28
September, she added three more districts — Hapur, Shamli and Sambhal
— to the existing 72. This was done under the archaic Uttar Pradesh
Land Revenue Act, 1901.

The idea is to strengthen the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) by giving an
impression of meeting people's aspirations, particularly in areas
where political rivals like the Gandhi family, Mulayam Singh Yadav and
Kalyan Singh have a strong footing. The larger gameplan is to pave the
way for trifurcation of Uttar Pradesh so that her party can rule in
all three states.

In the past, Auriyya was carved out of Etawah district, the home turf
of SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. Similarly, Kannauj was carved out of
Farrukhabad district. The Kannauj Lok Sabha seat is held by none other
than Mulayam's son, Akhilesh Yadav.

Will these tactics work? "Creating three new districts in western UP,
considered to be the bastion of Ajit Singh of Rashtriya Lok Dal, will
certainly be a blow to the Jat leader," said a political analyst. BSP
had fared badly here in the 2007 Assembly polls, winning only 63 seats
and losing close to 150.

However, the creation of districts did not work as planned. One such
exercise was undertaken in 2002, after Priyanka Gandhi visited
Sangrampur police station of Sultanpur district, falling within the
Amethi Parliamentary constituency represented by AICC General
Secretary Rahul Gandhi. She went to the police station to get an FIR
lodged by Rambhajan, a Dalit whose house was demolished by local
toughs.

Mayawati, then heading a BSP-BJP coalition, was outraged over the move
and took it as an attempt by the Congress to make inroads into her
vote bank.

She decided to hit back, announcing a new district comprising of five
Assembly segments falling within the Amethi Lok Sabha seat. Two
Assembly segments — Salon and Tiloi in Rae Bareli district — were
represented by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Mayawati named the new
district Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar. Gauriganj in Sultanpur
district, falling in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency, was chosen as
the district headquarters.

But when the BSP-BJP government fell in August 2003, Mulayam Singh
Yadav succeeded Mayawati and soon the government's notification for
the creation of the new district was revoked. Undaunted, Mayawati
restored the district in 2010 after becoming CM for the fourth time in
2007.

So far, in her four tenures as CM, Mayawati has created 21 districts.
In her first tenure, two were added. During her second term in 1997,
she created 14 new districts. Her third tenure in 2002-03 yielded only
one district and during her present tenure she has created four more.

"Mayawati is taking the people for a ride by announcing more and more
districts," says Ambika Chowdhary, senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader
and former revenue minister, who led from the front during Mulayam
Singh Yadav's regime (2003-07) for scrapping the new districts created
by Mayawati. "After all, where are the huge funds required for
creating the physical infrastructure and huge recurring expenditure in
appointing state employees for the new districts?" asks Chowdhary.

But it is not that simple, as several SP MLAs had rebelled against the
party leadership over the decision to scrap the districts. The
Allahabad High Court had also quashed the order and had upheld the
creation of new districts.

Sorry State

In Gauriganj, district HQ of Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Nagar, most
officials don't have proper offices.

•The social welfare officer operates from a hostel for Dalit students.

•The district magistrate (DM) has taken over the office of the tehsil.

•The chief development officer sits in the seed and fertiliser store
of the agriculture department.

•The chief medical officer (CMO) has occupied a room in the primary
health centre (PHC).

•The Superintendent of Police (SP) operates from a vacant building of the PHC.

•The district police lines occupies a small yard at Amethi of the
agricultural produce marketing board.

• The inspector of schools has occupied two classrooms of a girls
college, causing inconvenience to the girls and their harassment.

• The Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA), looking after primary education,
has occupied the building of a junior high school. The civil court is
proposed to be opened in this building and the office of the BSA is to
be shifted into the adjacent primary school.

Finding a residence is an equally big problem.

• The DM lives in the inspection bungalow of the PWD.

•The SP has occupied a small residential building of the Jal Nigam.

•The ADM and additional SP live in guest house of a cement factory of
a prominent company.

•The SDM has found refuge in a room in Navodaya Vidyalaya.

•The CMO lives in a room of the PHC.

•Other officers live in nearby Sultanpur or Rai Bareli towns and
shuttle daily to Gauriganj.

•Other departments operate from Sultanpur or Rai Bareli. But since
even old districts lack basic offices, who is worried? Certainly not
Mayawati.

Raja Bundela, who is also famous for his acting roles in Hindi cinema,
heads the Bundelkhand Congress, a fledgling political outfit that is
spearheading the movement for the creation of Bundelkhand state in UP
and Madhya Pradesh. He is not entirely against the creation of new
districts. "Ultimately, it will strengthen the case for the division
of UP, leading to the creation of Bundelkhand," says Bundela. "But the
recent announcement does not enthuse us. Mayawati is addressing
immediate political concerns — the 2012 Assembly polls. It was she who
first raised the issue of trifurcation of UP, then Rahul Gandhi also
pitched in but both did nothing to take the issue to its logical
conclusion.''

The UP government claims that the new districts have been created
after due diligence and to address the problem encountered in
administration of big districts where the population has grown
manifold in the past decades.

"The UP government, in February 1989, had constituted a permanent
high-powered committee headed by the chairman of the Board of Revenue,
to consider the proposals for the creation of new districts and
divisions with the aim of making the administration at the field level
more efficient and effective,'' says KK Sinha, principal secretary of
the revenue department. The revenue department is in charge of land
management, land revenue and administration from district to tehsil
(subdivision) level. "The districts have been created with the
approval of the committee," Sinha adds.

But this stretches credibility. Even while heading the coalition
government with the BJP in 1997, Mayawati had made Hathras tehsil of
Aligarh district a full-fledged district, naming it Mahamaya Nagar
after Lord Buddha's mother. Aligarh is the home district of the then
BJP satrap Kalyan Singh who, soon after becoming chief minister in
September 1997, scrapped the district.

Even after Kalyan Singh left the BJP, the animosity remains. Kalyan
Singh is currently the MP from Etah. In July 2009, Mayawati upgraded
the Kasganj tehsil of Etah district to district level and named it
Kanshiram Nagar.

The saga continues.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit leader flays Thackeray over Dadar station renaming

http://ibnlive.in.com/generalnewsfeed/news/dalit-leader-flays-thackeray-over-dadar-station-renaming/849479.html

Dalit leader flays Thackeray over Dadar station renaming
PTI | 07:10 PM,Oct 07,2011

Mumbai, Oct 7 (PTI) Criticising Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray for his
remark over renaming of Dadar station as Chaityabhoomi, a prominent
Dalit leader today said the political class in Maharashtra should
change its ideology in relation to caste. "In Maharashtra, there is a
caste ideology among the political class. This needs to change? But
will he (Thackeray) amend his ideology or not?" Jogendra Kawade, chief
of People's Republican Party, said while talking to PTI here.
Thackeray, addressing Sena's Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park here
yesterday, maintained that even if Dadar station is renamed as
Chaitybhoomi - as demanded by some groups - it would not bring any
change in the lives of Dalits. Dadar in central Mumbai houses
Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dalit icon B R Ambedkar. "Don't press
for such a demand. Dadar will remain Dadar. If the name is changed,
will it make any impact on your (Dalits) lives? You will remain where
you are," Thackeray had stated. Attacking Thackeray, Kawade said, "If
he does not want to change names, then why does he insists on renaming
Aurangabad as Sambhajinagar. Why did he rename Victoria Terminus
(station in Mumbai) as Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus?" Due to
Ambedkar's efforts and blessings, revolutionary changes have taken
place among Dalits, he added.

Sanjay Suri and Onir to produce Chauranga

BollywoodHungamaNewsNetwork Posted online: Sat Oct 08 2011, 14:55 hrs
Sanjay Suri and Onir, who have earlier worked together in My Brother
Nikhil, Bas Ek Pal, Sorry Bhai! and I Am will now be producing a film
titled Chauranga, based on a true story.

Onir will only produce Chauranga and not direct it. The film will be
directed by first time director Bikas Ranjan Mishra. It was small
piece of news about an incident that took place in the Kaimur district
of Bihar that inspired Bikas Ranjan Mishra to make the film. The
incident was reported on November 20, 2008, when a Dalit boy was
thrown under a running train because he wrote a love letter to an
upper caste girl. This incident created quite a stir internationally
but the Indian media never gave much of importance to the incident.

Chauranga tells the poignant story of an uneducated young Dalit boy
wanting to express his feelings to an educated girl. He seeks help
from his brother to write a love letter. The film explores the
consequences thereafter. Sanjay and Onir were so impressed when they
read the script that they decided to produce the movie. The movie will
not have any songs.

The cast of Chauranga is yet to be finalized. Auditions for the lead
role will begin soon and the makers also have plans to cast local
talent from Jharkhand. The shooting of the film will begin in January
next year.

By DNA Correspondent | Place: Ahmedabad | Agency: DNA

In a shocking incident, a man was hacked to death in Gota that comes
under Sarkhej police station on Thursday late night in a rivalry
between Patels and Dalits. A group from the Patel community reportedly
attacked Dalits with sharp weapons. One person was killed while the
other sustained serious injuries.

According to deputy superintendent of police (DySP), RK Patel, the
incident was prompted by an argument. He said that members of the
Dalit community were sitting near Mahashakti Chowk when the rival
group approached. The accused asked the Dalits to leave the place
claiming it to be their territory. The Dalits left but the group
