[ZESTCaste] Requesting signatures for solidarity statement

Hello,
Here is the the solidarity statement for Thirumavalavan, Meena Kandasamy and Samya with names of those supporting appended. Please feel free to circulate this. Do mark a copy to me, so that we can keep track of signatures. Those signing can add their designations to their names if they wish.

***

We call for all those who support democracy and free speech to express solidarity with Thirumavalavan, Meena Kandasamy and Samya.

Kathavarayan and Madurai Veeran are among the gods who are acknowledged to be Dalit and are worshipped by many castes. Clearly, in the oral history of the people, the gods have castes and these castes are not determined by who worships them.

The twin brothers Ponnar Shankar inhabit the realm between hero and deity. They have been fictionalised, recreated for the silver screen, and are worshipped across communities. Their origin myth remains contested territory - it is variously read as symbolic of the conflict between agriculturists/warriors and hunters, as part of founding tale of the land-owning agriculturist Kongu Vellala Gounder sub-caste and, in a textbook example of how Hindutva functions, have recently been claimed as reincarnations of the Pandavas. Like other deities of the people, they are firmly located in a historical imagination among a society of human beings, and not in a mythos of gods.

In a footnote in Uproot Hindutva: The Fiery Voice of the Liberation Panthers by Thirmavalavan, Meena Kandasamy describes Ponnar Shankar as dalit. M Loganathan, an advocate from Nanje Goundanpudur and Students Wing Convenor of the Kongu Nadu Munnetra Kazhagam (KMK), has been quoted in news reports as saying that there is evidence proving that Ponnar and Shankar are Kongu Vellala Gounders and claiming that depicting them as Dalits will lead to caste tension.

Dragging cultural contestations into the legal domain threatens the various, creative ways in which people innovate cultural practices and the equally creative ways in which research tries to make sense of them. Criminalising cultural expression and innovation is an attempt to freeze culture.
Locking up gods within castes is a tactic used by dominant castes to maintain status quo. This is an open threat against dalit belief, expression and right to self-determination. Like the repeated physical atrocities against Dalits, attempts to suppress their cultural and intellectual autonomy and self-assertion are part of a wider onslaught on democracy. This case is part of the drive to reconstruct India as a religious and cultural monolith, which it has never been.

The litigant had earlier complained that the film based on the Ponnar Shankar story, scripted by M. Karunanidhi, is misrepresenting deities but had contented himself with writing a letter to the censor board then. It is the leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal, a well-known Dalit poet and translator and a publishing house that have been singled out for filing a case.

We are secretly pleased that a footnote* is believed to have such power. Academics in our ranks are even now rejoicing at the thought of how they may change the world, one footnote at a time. But, mostly, we are offended.

We are offended that a deity being named dalit can even be called an offensive act. We are offended at how legal backing is available for openly-casteist harassment. We are offended at news reports that present this case as a quaint little example of caste quibbling,  without pointing to the long history of violence, without pointing to the continued conspiracy to maintain the status quo and culture of violence that this case is an outcome of.

Our histories are deeply marked by caste. We seek to emancipate our present by reclaiming these histories for the marginalised.

Re-writing history from the perspective of the marginalised is necessary and vital for the self-determination of dalit communities. Now, such an effort is being criminalised. This is a threat to democracy and the pluralist ethos. This is an offence against free speech. We stand in solidarity with Thirumavalavan, Meena Kandasamy and Samya, in support of the subaltern perspective and assertion they stand for.

*Here are some inflammatory footnotes about violence against Dalits:

Dalits have been denied temple entry, forced to work with hazardous material, treated as bonded labour and attacked for attempting to buy their way out of their bondage (subhead: Dalit Family Attacked over Land, September 2002).
In Kalapatti village, sustained violence against dalits, has lead to many of them to fleeing their homes. "On 16 May 2004, a Dalit settlement in the village of Kalapatti in Tamil Nadu was attacked by upper-caste members (Country Reports 2004 28 Feb. 2005; UN 23 Feb. 2005; DHRM n.d.; Frontline 19 June – 2 July 2004). According to the sources, approximately 100 houses were burnt down by a group of 200 people and Dalits trying to escape were assaulted, including reports of sexual assault of women (Country Reports 2004 28 Feb. 2005; UN 23 Feb. 2005; DHRM n.d.; Frontline 19 June – 2 July 2004)," notes the UN Refugee Agency website

[ZESTCaste] Dalits vent caste ire in Haryana

http://www.telegraphindia.com/1110614/jsp/nation/story_14110747.jsp

Dalits vent caste ire in Haryana
OUR CORRESPONDENT

Chandigarh, June 13: Hundreds of Dalits embittered by a caste clash
with Jats last year today vented their anger by throwing stones at
police in a restricted zone, leading to a baton-charge and several
arrests.

The Dalits assembled this morning outside the Hisar district
collector's office to protest against cases of atrocities by Jats.
They were angry because six upper-caste Jats, among the key accused in
a case of caste violence last year, had been given bail in May.

On April 21 last year, a Jat group burnt down several Dalit homes in
the village of Mirchpur. A 17-year-old disabled Dalit girl and her
father were burnt alive in the rampage. The immediate reason for the
Jats' anger seemed to be an argument their youths had over the barking
of a dog that belonged to a Dalit family.

The Dalits fled Mirchpur, a village that has one of the highest
numbers of teachers in Haryana — most of them Jats.

Over 90 Jats were arrested after the April 21 incident. Several of
them got bail, but the release of the six key accused last month
seemed to have angered the Dalits the most.

Today, the Dalits asked for the burnt homes in Mirchpur to be rebuilt
and the six who had got bail to be rearrested.

[ZESTCaste] TN dalit boy thrashed for fetching water from public tap

TN dalit boy thrashed for fetching water from public tap
A Subburaj, TNN | Jun 14, 2011, 03.40am IST

COIMBATORE: Caste Hindus of a nondescript village on the outskirts of
Coimbatore allegedly assaulted a 16-year-old dalit boy on Sunday for
attempting to fetch drinking water from a public tap in the area.

The boy, A Vasanthakumar, is now recovering at a government hospital
in Annur, about 25km away from Coimbatore. A Class X student,
Vasanthakumar belongs to the dalit Chakkiliya community. He resides at
Nallichetty Palayam, a dalit hamlet outside Annur town. The area is
reeling under extreme water scarcity.

As per the complaint lodged with the police, Vasanthakumar on late
Sunday evening went on his bicycle with empty pots to
Karikkilipalayam, about 4km away from his home, to fetch water.
Dominated by Kongu Chettiyars, classified as a most backward caste,
Karikkilipalayam is blessed with round the clock water supply as a
pipeline of the Pillur water scheme passes through it. He reached a
public tap located at around 9pm and started collecting water. Three
women of the Chettiyar community, who had come to the tap, started
abusing him using caste names. When he protested, they beat him up.
The women told him that they would not allow any untouchable to fetch
water. A local butcher named P Damodaran Chettiyar also roughed him
up.

Vasanthakumar, who sustained injuries in the attack, was admitted to
Annur hospital. His father Anandan, a coolie, said dalits were
prevented from cutting hair at saloons in the locality and prevented
from using mobile phones outside their huts.

Chennai
Cops ignore dalits in bondage
indianexpress Express News Service , The New Indian Express
Posted on Jun 14, 2011 at 12:45pm IST

CHENNAI: Police have failed to book perpetrators under the SC/ST
atrocities law in the case of a Dalit family that was allegedly
harassed and publicly beaten by caste Hindus in K Thattumal Village,
Kumbakonam. In fact police helped the main accused get an anticipatory
bail.

K Rajamanikkam (39) and his wife Radha had worked as bonded labourers
at a brick kiln owned by Thalaiparamasivam of Devanachery.
Thalaiparamasivam had promised the couple Rs 15,000 for one year's
work. But, after a year, he refused to let them leave. Instead he
claimed they owed him money. "When we moved to another brick kiln,
Thalaiparamasivam claimed we needed to pay him Rs 10,000 as dues,"
Rajamanikkam's sister 44-year-old Vijaya said.

When Rajamanikkam and Vijaya met Thalaiparamasivam at his marriage
hall on May 5, he and his brother Pandian allegedly abused them and
beat Rajamanikkam, said Vijaya. She claimed Thalaiparamasivam demanded
Rs 10,000 rupees to free them from his control.

"We borrowed Rs 10,000 and paid him. But in five days, he and his
associates Murugan and Loganathan, came and beat us with logs. My
brother sustained a head injury and my hand was broken," she said.

"When they approached the Swamimalai police station, the police
recorded Vijaya's statement, but obtained her signature without even
reading out the statement to her," said A Kathir, Executive Director
of Evidence, an NGO that works for Dalit rights. When the Evidence
team examined the case, they found the police had invoked neither the
Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
against the aggressors nor booked them under theBonded Labour System
(Abolition) Act.

According to Kathir, most Dalits and other people from the subaltern
community worked as bonded labourers in the brick kilns owned by caste
Hindus in Kumbakonam, but action had not been initiated by the police
or district administration.

Worse, Rajamanikkam moved from Thalaiparamasivam's brick kiln only to
end up a bonded labourer in another brick kiln. The police failed to
invoke the Bonded Labour Abolition Act in this instance as
well.Despite several attempts, station inspector Soundarajan could not
be reached for comment.

Botsa is anti-Dalit, says MP

June 14, 2011
DC
Hyderabad

June 13: The Amalapuram Congress MP, Mr G.V. Harsha Kumar, has written
a letter to the Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, finding fault
with the appointment of Mr Botsa Satyanarayana as chief of the state
Congress. He stated that Mr Satyanarayana was "known for his
anti-Dalit stand" and "awfully corrupt practices" and should not have
been considered at all for the post. Mr Kumar said in the letter the
party would suffer "a great loss" due to Mr Satyanarayana's
appointment and there is a danger that dalits will distance themselves
from the party fold and join Mr Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress. He
suggested that a leader from Telangana should have been appointed as
the PCC chief.

[ZESTCaste] Dalits Agitate Seeking Action against Pejavar Swamiji

Udupi: Dalits Agitate Seeking Action against Pejavar Swamiji

Team Mangalorean

Posted at 9-15 am

Udupi, Jun 14: Dalit organizations staged a dharna in front of the
deputy commissioner's office on Monday, condemning Shri Vishwesha
Tirtha Swamiji's recent statement on untouchability and seeking his
arrest under the Untouchability Offences Act.

It may be recalled here the Swamiji had termed the recent conversion
of over 2,000 Dalits to Buddhism as 'drama'. He had also said that the
caste system was the soul of Hindu faith and its eradication amounted
to eradication of the faith itself. He had also said that the Dalits
embracing Buddhism would not help banish untouchability.

Dalit Sangharsh Samiti's state organizing convener Prakash
Byadarahalli, speaking on the occasion, a lie that the Hindu faith and
the Buddhist faith are one and the same was being circulated. There
were many differences between the two. The Hindu way of life was
evolved by the sages as a Vedic concept and was not a faith at all.
The Swamiji should widen his knowledge in the subject, Byadarahalli
said.

He further demanded the immediate arrest of the Swamiji for his
anti-Constitution statement, otherwise the agitation would be
intensified, he said. He also said the Swamiji owed an apology to the
Dalits.

DSS district convener Hoovappa Master, distric convener Shyamaraj
Birti, Manjunath Giliyar, Nagaraj Kundapur, Sanjeeva Karkala, Sundar
Gujjarabettu, Ananda Master and others also took part in the dharna.

Village ostracises dalit for being a witness in murder case
TNN | Jun 14, 2011, 12.49am IST

TIRUCHI: A Dalit was allegedly ostracized from his village near
Tiruchi for presenting himself as a witness in a murder case involving
a local DMK functionary. M Palaniandi, a DMK union secretary and key
accused in the murder of N Purushothaman, had allegedly threatened N
Karunanidhi of K K Nagar near Somarasanpettai to turn hostile in the
case. A villager went around drumming the `tandora,' announcing the
decision of the village bigwigs to ostracise Karunanidhi on Sunday.

Purushothaman, also a Dalit was hacked to death by a gang in 2007.
Palaniandi and his brothers were cited as key accused in the case and
were arrested. But he was granted bail nine days later, inviting
criticism from Madurai bench of Madras high court that ordered the
investigation be transferred to CB-CID. However, all the witnesses
began to turn hostile. Karunanidhi claimed that Palaniandi pressurised
him to turn hostile and as he declined to do so, the village
ostracised him.

On Monday, Karunanidhi submitted a petition to Collector Jayashree
Muralidharan alleging that few influential men in his village who
passed the diktat also threatened other villagers with similar fate if
they did not boycott him. Jayashree forwarded the petition to the
superintendent of police S Nizamuddin. Police said they had already
received the information about the alleged ostracism and were
investigating.

[ZESTCaste] Dalit protesters clash with police in Mirchpur

http://www.tribuneindia.com/2011/20110614/main3.htm

Dalit protesters clash with police in Mirchpur
Raman Mohan
Tribune News Service

Hisar, June 13
The police today resorted to a lathi charge to disperse a mob of
villagers protesting at the Mini Secretariat here. The protesters
belonged to Dubeta, Bithmada and Alipur villages near here. They were
protesting against three incidents in these villages involving non-Jat
villagers.

The district administration had imposed prohibitory orders under
Section 144, CrPC, around the Mini Secretariat in view of a threat to
protest given by a non-Jat organisation led by Ved Pal Tanwar.

The crowd gathered at the Mini Secretariat and broke barricades. When
the police resisted, the crowd also pelted stones on cops. The police
then swung into action and lathi-charged the protesters.

An official spokesman said 11 persons were arrested in connection with
the incident. They included Ved Pal Tanwar who, the police claimed,
had "instigated" the protesters.

Two protesters and four police personnel were injured in the clash.
The injured policmen included Bimla Devi, Inspector, ASI Bhup Singh
and head constables Krishan Kumar and Ramphal.

The spokesman said the villagers had met the authorities a few days
ago. They were informed that all miscreants involved in the incidents
at the three villages had been arrested.

He said Rajpal of Bithmada village had been assaulted when he had gone
to Ukalana Mandi, near here, a few days ago. Both accused had been
arrested.

In Alipur village, Hari Ram belonging to the Bawaria tribe had been
arrested in connection with a theft. Stolen property was also
recovered from him. The father of the accused later filed a complaint
in a local court, alleging that the sarpanch and his associates were
trying to force members of their tribe to leave the village.

So far as the incident in Dubeta village was concerned, all accused in
the case of assault on a villager had been arrested.
