Mayawati plays Dalit card against govt

Bahujan Samaj Party leader and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati
blasted the Congress-led central government and said her government
has been targeted just because it is led by a Dalit woman. She said
none of the Congress-led state governments are doing satisfactory job.
"That includes Maharashtra too," she said.

The chief minister said that whenever any incident of atrocity or a
law and order-related issue takes place in UP, the central government
and the Congress waste no time in highlighting it at the national
level with the help of the media. "But, look at the Congress-led
states like Haryana and Delhi, they are not behind any other state in
such cases. For that matter, Maharashtra too has earned a bad name in
the past few years for the criminal cases that took place here," she
added.

She talked about the Dalit family in Vidarbha which she said is still
pleading for justice even after most of its family members were killed
in a heinous case of atrocity a few years ago.

A government officer was burnt alive by the oil mafia a few months ago
while the killers of senior journalist J Dey are at large even after
two weeks of the incident, she said. "There are cases that happened in
Haryana and Delhi creating a serious threat to the law and order
situation recently. But the Centre attacks only the UP government if
any criminal case takes place. This is happening just because the
government is led by a Dalit woman." She was referring to the
Bhatta-Parsaul incidents for which Congress had held her government
responsible.

Mayawati is on a two-day tour of the city. She inaugurated her party's
state headquarters office at Chembur on Saturday and is addressing a
rally of workers from Maharashtra and Gujarat at Goregaon on Sunday.

Mayawati has also demanded roll back of the price hike of petroleum
product prices. "We are writing a letter to the Central government
demanding a roll back of the prices as it will badly affect the
lower-middle and middle class of the country," she said. "The
government has no sympathy towards the common man and it is engaged in
safeguarding the interests of the industrialists and the upper middle
class."

She also demanded that instead of rising the rates of the petro
products that results in the rising inflation, the central government
should think of a rise in the prices of liquor and tobacco products.
