4 held for torturing woman in Palsana village

SURAT: Four of family was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly
tonsuring the head of a woman and assaulting her on Sunday at Malekpor
village in Palsana taluka of Surat. Woman's husband, brother-in-law
and uncle-in-law were arrested along with the barber who shaved the
head of the 30-year-old victim.
According to the case details, the Dalit victim was spotted with a man
in the village by her husband Dipak Rathod on Sunday. Suspecting her
of having an illicit relationship with the man, Dipak, his brother
Hitesh and uncle Raju beat her up with sticks. Later, the family
members called barber Hasmukh Maisuriya and tonsured her head.
The victim was then paraded with the shaved head in public on village
streets. Out of humiliation, the woman jumped in river Mindhola to end
life. However, the locals came to her rescue and saved her. She was
given treatment for injuries and police was informed. Following the
complaint, police arrested Dipak, Hitesh, Raju and Hasmukh. "The
accused will be produced in court. More details will be collected
during remand," the police said.
On December 4, 2010, a 35-year-old woman was tied naked to a tree and
chilly powder was applied to her private parts in Dharampur village of
Mandvi taluka in Surat. Here, too the in-laws suspected her of having
an illicit relationship.
