SC/ST body alleges conspiracy behind KGB charges

The SC/ST All India Confederation today came out in support of former
Chief Justice of India K G Balakrishnan, alleging there was a
conspiracy behind the concerted attack on the NHRC chairman, whose
relatives are facing charges of amassing disproportionate
wealth.
"The campaign against Balakrishnan is part of a conspiracy by forces
that seek to resist the ascension of persons belonging to SC/ST
sections to high posts in the country," K Ramankutty, president of
SC/ST All India Confederation, said at a press conference here.
He said it was ironical that those who remained silent on allegations
against other Supreme Court judges which had come to light in the last
15 years were taking up cudgels against Balakrishnan.
The Confederation was not against a probe into the allegations but it
was wrong to portray a person as guilty even before conducting any
investigation, Ramankutty said.
"The attempt is to malign a person holding a key post who came up from
a very low background. This is very unfortunate," he said.
The probe should cover the allegations against the many judges who are
facing charges, Ramankutty said, adding, the Confederation would
submit a memorandum to the President and Prime Minister, seeking a
just and impartial enquiry into the matter.
Ramankutty claimed that Balakrishnan had expressed his willingness to
face any kind of probe and so far none had produced any evidence to
prove the charges against him.
To a question, he said the Confederation did not want Balakrishnan to
resign as NHRC chairman in view of the allegations.
