Honour killing in Nawada
S B Sinha, TNN, Jan 17, 2011, 12.13am IST
NAWADA: The horror of "honour killing" has shattered the world of a
couple deeply in love.

A newly married man in the city has paid with his life for daring to
enter into wedlock with a girl belonging to a minority community.

The incident, which reminded people of the Rizwan case of Kolkata a
few years ago, took place in a locality of Nawada on Friday night.

Ranjit Goswami, 30, an accountant at Nawada block's primary health
centre, and Ayesha Khatoon of Pithori village under Akbarbar block of
this district, tied the knot on January 9 after two years of love
affair.

The marriage was solemnised according to Hindu rituals at Ranjit's
ancestral house at Thathera gali of the town.

This enraged the girl's family, which currently lives in Lalbagh area
in Kolkata, so much that they along with a local mukhia forcibly
entered Goswami's house on Friday night and forced him to swallow a
pesticide tablet. He was later rushed to Patna Medical College
Hospital, where he succumbed to the poison.

According to case details, the girl's parents, after coming to know of
Ayesha s marriage, tracked her and came to Nawada a few days ago.
Here, Ayesha's brother Izazul Haque, maternal uncle Pato Khan and
Pithori panchayat mukhia Bholi barged into the house of Ranjit,
thrashed the couple and forced him to swallow a deadly pesticide
tablet.

A local resident, Suraj, has alleged that Goswami was forced to
swallow the tablet in the presence of a local police official who had
accompanied the girl's kin to Ranjit's house.

However, Nawada SP GP Sinha, while talking to TOI on Sunday afternoon,
denied that any local police official had accompanied the girl's kin
to the victim's house and witnessed the poisoning of Ranjit.

He added that on the basis of Ranjit's statement at the Sadar
hospital, where he was rushed in a critical condition, an FIR has been
lodged against the girl's brother, maternal uncle and Bholi mukhia.

Ayesha, too, in her statement recorded under Section 164 of the IPC
before a judicial magistrate in Nawada civil court on Saturday, said
she had married Ranjit and was staying with him as his legally wedded
wife. She said that her brother, maternal uncle and Bholi mukhia had
forcibly administered the pesticide tablet to Ranjit to kill him.

Ranjit, who was referred to PMCH in a critical condition, died on Saturday.

The SP said that a case of murder has been instituted at the Nawada
Town police station against Ayesha s brother, maternal uncle and Bholi
mukhia. Raids were on to nab the culprits, he said.

The widowed Ayesha was taken to Kolkata, much against her wishes, by
the Lalbagh Bazaar police of Kolkata, where a case of "abduction" had
been lodged by her parents.

Meanwhile, Nawada's BJP MP Bhola Singh on Sunday evening visited the
crowd staging a dharna at the Prajatantra Chowk here in protest
against the "honour" killing of Ranjit and expressed deep sorrow over
the incident.

Town police had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd which
had paralysed traffic in the town.
