Mayawati flays 'anti-Dalit' temple ritual in Karnataka

LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president and Uttar Pradesh Chief
Minister Mayawati has slammed an age-old temple ritual in Karnataka
where people, the majority of them Dalits, roll over plantain leaves
with leftovers of meals eaten by Brahmins, believing this will cure
them of skin ailments.

Called the 'urulu seve' (roll over ritual), the tradition at the Kukke
Subramanya temple in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada is said
to have been followed for 400 years, according to the temple
authorities.

The ritual is undertaken in the belief that it will cure people of
skin ailments.

Though people from all castes, including Brahmins, perform the ritual,
a majority of them are said to be Dalits and those from backward
classes.

In a statement issued here Saturday, Mayawati labelled the practice as
being "grossly casteist" and "against the letter and spirit of the
Indian Constitution."

"This custom of making poor Dalits roll over used leaf plates was not
only "anti-Dalit" but also deserves to be abhorred.

"It was quite apparent that the objective behind the practice was only
to humiliate the socially downtrodden, therefore it was high time the
Karnataka government rose to the occasion to bring an end to this
social evil," the statement said.

The chief minister also shot off a letter to her Karnataka counterpart
urging him to ban the practice.

[ZESTCaste] Problems facing Dalits discussed at 'sansad'

Problems facing Dalits discussed at 'sansad'
TNN, Dec 12, 2010, 05.26am IST

PATNA: It was Parliament of a different kind. It did not have the
elected representatives of the people nor was there any Bill for
legislation. But it certainly provided the Dalit students drawn from
different districts of the state a platform to share their problems
and devise ways for improvement.

Patna University (PU) Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and
Inclusive Policy organized the first ever Dalit Chhatra Sansad at
geology auditorium here on Saturday in which the participants frankly
discussed the problems facing them.

Inaugurating the students' Parliament, PU vice-chancellor Shyam Lal
highlighted the problems faced by Dalit students in pursuing their
doctoral work and appealed to the intellectuals to save these scholars
from exploitation.

Bihar legislative assembly Speaker Uday Narain Chaudhary exhorted the
students to shun their inhibition and fight against social injustice.

Prominent among those who addressed this Parliament included N K Arya,
Vinay Kanth, Daisy Narain, Pramod Kumar, Kamlesh Kumari and Nagendra
Nath, all teachers.

At the outset, Ziya-ul Hasan welcomed the guests. Centre director Rama
Shankar Arya conducted the session. Pushkar Deo proposed the vote of
thanks.

Bangalore, Dec 12 (IANS) A bizarre tradition of people rolling over
plantain leaves with leftovers of meals eaten by Brahmins at a
Karnataka temple to cure themselves of skin ailments is igniting
protests.

Called the 'urulu seve' (roll over ritual), the tradition at the Kukke
Subramanya temple in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada is said
to have been followed for 400 years, according to temple authorities.

The ritual is undertaken in the belief that it will cure people of
skin ailments. It is performed on the annual 'shasthi' - sixth day of
the month - festival.

The three-day festival concluded Saturday and the ritual was performed
Friday by many men and women amid protests by a small group of people.

Now, several organisations in Karnataka have begun a campaign to ban
the practice saying it is inhuman.

Though people from all castes, including Brahmins, perform the ritual,
a majority of them are said to be Dalits and those from backward
classes.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, a Dalit herself, wants it
banned. She issued a statement to this effect in Lucknow Saturday.

Temple authorities say they do not force anyone to perform the ritual.

The protesters were upset that the practice was allowed, though the
temple was under the state government's Muzrai (religious affairs)
department.

Muzrai Minister V.S. Acharya termed the practice 'innocuous'. He said
no one was forced by the temple authorities to perform the ritual. 'It
is a matter of belief,' he said.

The temple, about 300 km from here, is devoted to Subramanya. The idol
of Subramanya is in the shape of a nine-headed serpent. Legend has it
that Subramanya protected serpent god Vasuki who had taken shelter in
a cave at Kukke from Garuda.

A well-known ritual performed at the temple is 'sarpa samskara' to
ward off the effect of 'sarpa dosha' - curse of the serpent god.

Among the celebrities who have prayed at the temple is cricket legend
Sachin Tendulkar.

Krishna withdraws his fast

December 11th, 2010
DC Correspondent Share Buzz up!Hyderabad, Dec. 10: The Madiga
Reservation Porata Samiti leader, Mr Manda Krishna Madiga, on Friday
called off his indefinite fast that he had been observing even after
forcible hospitalisation since Wednesday night.

Mr Krishna Madiga withdrew his agitation after the Chief Minister, Mr
N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, reiterated the government's commitment for
categorisation of the Scheduled Castes into sub-groups.

In an official press release, the Chief Minister said the government
was ready to send an all-party delegation to the Centre before January
31 to pursue the categorisation issue.

In an unusual manner, the press release was issued on the letter pad
of the Chief Minister who also signed the press release. This was done
apparently to end the impasse.

Mr Krishna Madiga, who had initially wanted the Chief Minister to lead
the all-party delegation to New Delhi and make an announcement in this
regard, scaled down his demand to a letter from the Chief Minister.
