Amar praises Mayawati for voting in favour of UPA

STAFF WRITER 18:49 HRS IST
Allahabad, Apr 29 (PTI) Expelled SP leader Amar Singh today heaped
praises on his one time rival UP Chief Minister Mayawati for
supporting the Congress-led UPA during voting on the cut motion in
Parliament saying she was a leader who did things "openly".

"Mayawati is one politician who does not fall in the category of
chaploos (sycophant). She does whatever she feels is right and then
does it openly. Be it the cash garland episode or supporting the UPA
government in the crucial cut motion, she has always displayed a rare
candour," the Rajya Sabha MP said here.

The former SP general secretary, who used to be known for his
vitriolic attacks on Mayawati during his association with Mulayam
Singh Yadav, was addressing a function organised to press the demand
for a separate Poorvanchal state.

Singh charged the SP supremo with betraying him "who was his most
loyal supporter".

[ZESTCaste] No pact between Congress, BSP: Digvijay Singh

No pact between Congress, BSP: Digvijay Singh

IANS, Apr 29, 2010, 07.50pm IST

LUCKNOW: Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Thursday said the support
extended by the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to the central government
over the cut motions in the Lok Sabha should not be viewed as a tacit
pact between the two parties.

"We are thankful to (Uttar Pradesh chief minister) Mayawati, whose
party supported us on the cut motions in parliament. But it should not
be linked with any kind of secret pact," Singh told reporters here.

The BSP supported the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance against
the opposition-sponsored cut motions Tuesday.

"There is no pact between Congress and BSP. We want to make it clear
that the Congress would continue its struggle against the BSP over its
anti-people policies like misusing public money to erect statues and
memorials," he added.

Singh said that by supporting the Congress government, Mayawati had
strengthened the secular forces. "It helped in keeping the communal
forces at bay from attaining power at the centre."

Replying to a question related to soaring prices, Singh said that
price rise was not a political issue and all political parties must
come together to devise strategies to contain it.

[ZESTCaste] Remembering a legend

Remembering a legend

A play on Jyotiba Phule was skilfully handled.

To present two centuries old biographical details of the legendary
social activist Jyotiba Phule, flawlessly, is not an easy task for a
playwright. But, for noted playwright Vijay Bhasker, a deft hand at
scripting many successful plays, the task was not a difficult one. For
the play Mahatma Jyoti Rao Phule, the playwright selected some
episodes from the life of the social reformer.

Born in 1827, Jyotiba Phule was a proactive social thinker of the 19th
century. He worked for the unity of the deprived and exploited
sections in the rule of Peshwa of Pune.

He got married to Savitribai in 1840. He taught his wife Savitribai
and later employed her to teach in the first school for girls, he
launched at Pune, despite bitter opposition from the orthodoxy. Jyoti
encouraged remarriage of widows and prevented the inhuman act of
tonsuring the heads of widows and led a barbers' strike which rose
against this practice in 1889. He extensively wrote on exploitation of
the downtrodden and women and worked for the spread of the message of
'Satyashodhak Samaj' that he launched in 1873. The play that was
staged at Ravindra Bharati was well attended. It portrayed how
Maharastrian Bhatts (Brahmins) of that time troubled Jyoti's family
and others who mingled with other castes in wedding and
festivities.Vidyasagar in the title role of Jyotiba and Surabhi
Prabhavati as his wife Savitribai played well these pivotal roles. The
play opened with the sequence of Vamanavatara. Vamana the incarnation
of Mahavishnu is seen pushing demon King Bali Chakravarthi into
Paataala. The playwright likened Bali to the down-trodden and Vamana
as the first oppressor. Jyotiba too believed all religious texts are
man made, not God created. Chilakaraju Narsayya as Jyoti Phule's
father Govinda Rao was mumbling his lengthy emotional dialogue. The
play was presented by Dasya Art Theatre. Souda Aruna directed the
play.

[ZESTCaste] BSP members stage stir to protest Dalit killings in Haryana

http://www.deccanherald.com/content/65931/bsp-members-stage-stir-protest.html

BSP members stage stir to protest Dalit killings in Haryana
Chikmagalur: April 25, DHNS:

Members of the Bahujana Samajavadi Party (BSP) burnt the effigy of
Haryana government near Hanumatha Circle in Chikmagalur on Sunday to
condemn the incident, where two Dalits were killed by setting ablaze,
in Mirchpur village of Hisar district in Haryana State on Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, BSP District President K T Radhakrishna said
that it was a inhumane act that an 18-year-old physically challenged
Dalit girl and her father were killed by setting them on fire just for
a silly reason that their dogs barked at an upper cast member. "The
incident is a disgrace to the secular system of our nation," he
criticised and alleged that the incident was a part of an organised
conspiracy of casteists to eradicate secular system from our nation.
Secular organisations should join hands to fight against such inhumane
and anti-secular movements, Radhakrishna said.

The Haryana Chief Minister, who failed to prevent such incidents,
should own up the responsibility and resign from the post, he
demanded. Those miscreants should be nabbed and should be brought
before the law, he added. Leader Velayudhan said that the Haryana
incident is a testimony to the fact that the communal forces are
gaining control over government. Downtrodden people will be free from
all tortures, only if they secure political power through unity, he
said. "The soft stand of the government towards communal organisations
was the reason for recurrence of atrocities against downtrodden class
in India," he added.

BSP State In-Charge Committee Secretary G K Basavaraju, Leaders
Eshwar, Srinivas and Gangadhar were present.
