Re: [ZESTCaste] Des Raj Kali, a Dalit writer, to feature at Jaipur literature fest

I just read this and I dont know who to get in touch with, but does anybody know if there was any video shooting done of this event. I strongly encourage all on the forum to kindly video record such events if they are attending it, simply to preserve dalit cultural contribution via such activities.

Especially, when main-stream media will not air dalit views and celebrations, it is now possible to simply shoot and upload such videos and information on youtube etc.

Please let me know if anybody has video of this event.

Regards,

Prashant

[ZESTCaste] Dalit tortured for daring to wear slippers

Dalit tortured for daring to wear slippers

NDTV Correspondent, Tuesday February 2, 2010, Dindigul, Tamil Nadu

Even after 60 years of Independence, there still exists a side of
India that is hard to believe. A Dalit man in Tamil Nadu was forced to
eat human excreta because he wore slippers in the presence of upper
caste people.

"They said hereafter no one should come in wearing slippers.
Arokiasamy told Anbu to put human excreta into my mouth. They hit me
severely on my abdomen and shoved it into my mouth," said the victim
Sadayandi.

"Even men who come by cycle have to get down and push it into the
village," said his wife Nagajothi.

The police took more than a week to file the First Information Report
(FIR) under the Prevention of Atrocities Act. And even after that,
they were not willing to book the accused. Instead, they want the
victim - who is in hiding because of fear - to prove that the crime
occurred.

"If this has happened he has to come forward to give some clues and
explain about the incident. Only then I can go deep into this matter,"
said the Deputy Superintendent of Police.

The Madras High Court has now asked for an action taken report.

A few years ago, NDTV had exposed atrocities against Dalits in the
state. In many areas they are forced to remove footwear before
entering the village, walls deny them access, thorny fences greet them
in fields they use as toilets. Even elected Panchayat leaders are
forced to quit. Thanks to vote bank politics successive governments
seem to have only gone soft on dominant communities.

Politically, Dalits are a divided lot in Tamil Nadu. While the state
pampers them with welfare schemes, its tacit support to human rights
violations by powerful dominant communities is only making things
worse.

[ZESTCaste] J-K govt admits Valimiki Dalits' grouse genuine

J-K govt admits Valimiki Dalits' grouse genuine

Pawan Bali
CNN-IBN

OUT OF BOUNDS: Meena Gill, a Valmiki Dalit, couldn't appear for J-K
medical entrance exams.
New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir government admits that Valmiki
community's grouse about not being able to get Schedule Caste
certificates is genuine.

The government has now decided to set up a committee to look into the
matter just a couple of days CNN-IBN reported that the community was
doomed to live as scavengers in Jammu.

"The demands of the Valimikis are genuine. They are not outsiders but
adopted ones. Due to Article 370 giving state subject to them is
difficult. In order to solve their situation we will form a committee
consisting of all party members who can solve their plight soon," says
J-K Minister for Relief and Rehabilitation Raman Bhalla.

There are about 500 families of Valmiki Dalits in Jammu, who are
forced to become sweepers as the state law does not recognise their
community, who are traditionally manual scavengers, as state subjects.

As Valmiki community is not recognised as state subject in Jammu and
Kashmir so the community members cannot apply for a scheduled caste
certificate or apply for a government job.

The only exception is that they can apply for the post of sweeper.

In 1957 over 70 families of sweepers were relocated in Jammu and
Kashmir to fill in for their posts of striking sweepers and ever since
they have lived in the state but without basic rights

As per section 35-B of J-K state service rules, only a hereditary
state subject can get a government job and the Valmiki community
members brought in from Punjab are still treated as migrants,
resulting in no government jobs for them.

The community has also approached the J-K government for recognition
of their rights.

[ZESTCaste] They fail to wash away their woes

They fail to wash away their woes

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 02 Feb 2010 02:40:00 AM ISTLast

CHENNAI: Oorukku Oru Kudi (The lonely families) a documentary film is
a poignant portrayal about the lives of dhobis (washermen), who were
discriminated and pushed to margins of the society.

The film was a handiwork of filmmaker Thirumani, which leaves behind
the message of a much-needed social transformation for the viewers to
ponder. He said, "This film is about the people who were tormented by
the caste system, vanquished to the very margins of a social order,
who almost have a shadow existence in this society, by a social order
which is supported by the religion." This story is about the dhobis
who wash the clothes of the Dalits.

Julius, a dhobi woman from Tindivanam said, "Even in my village, the
Dalits do not want us to take up other jobs like tailoring,
carperntry.

They feel if we stop serving them, they feel a loss of prestige in the
eyes of others." Thirumani said, "That is the saddest irony, even
Dalits who suffer discrimination in the hands of others, want someone
to be under him to feel superior, this attitude should change."
Dhobis, who are scattered and less in number, are not even counted
properly by the census. The 1991 census say they number 27,000 in the
State. According to NGOs estimate including those who have converted
to Christianity and Islam in search of a social recognition the dhobi
population in the State should be close to 7.5 lakh.

One of the highlights of the film is that the dhobis should be
included under the census. The story ends with a thought provoking
quote, where one of the dhobis say, "When we go to the thalisdar
office, they say because we are Christians we belong to BC, but when
we come back to our village we again become a dhobi, where our job is
to wash other's clothes, we do not have any respect." The film also
highlights other issues like their landlessness, lack of
socio-economic mobility, poor educational access and hardly any
political representation. The release of the movie was organised by an
NGO Community Care Trust.

[ZESTCaste] 'Data on farm suicides has huge errors'

'Data on farm suicides has huge errors'

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 02 Feb 2010 05:15:00 AM ISTLast
Updated : 02 Feb 2010 07:46:30 AM IST

BANGALORE: The figures as showed by the National Crime Records Bureau
on farmer suicides have "huge errors" resulting in disparity in the
numbers of those who have committed suicide in the country said
journalist and writer, P Sainath.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the 36th National Annual
Conference of the Indian Association of Clinical Psychology.

The NCRB reports have excluded women, dalits and adivasis, Sainath said.

"In our society, in most cases, the title of the land is never in the
name of the woman. However, woman do most of the work in the
farmland," he said.

"The adivasis and Dalits have not been recognised as farmers due to
improper title deeds," he added.

"The numbers we have is authentic but not accurate," he says.

Sainath pointed out the increasing cost of rural health care. With
India becoming the first largest health sector provider, the
increasing privatisation of the sector has made farmers shell out huge
amounts on health bills, he said.

The cash farming which was largely promoted by the government mainly
aimed at the imports also had it affect when the prices plummeted,
says Sainath.

Many farmers switched to cash crop such as Vanilla, which in the first
two years gave farmers a return of Rs 4000 per kg.

Later the prices were slashed to a meager Rs 68 per kg, which not even
enough to meet the farmers cultivation costs, he underlined.

Dalit students abooked under SC/ST Act: MLA

Express News ServiceFirst Published : 02 Feb 2010 03:00:00 AM ISTLast Updated :

HYDERABAD: Taking strong exception to framing of cases against seven
`Dalit' students under the SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act,
Secunderabad Cantonment legislator P Shanker Rao today urged the
Governor and the chief minister to take action against the police
officials concerned.

``Surprisingly, for the first time in the country, even cases were
booked against Dalit students under the SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention)
Act,'' he told reporters in the Assembly lobbies today.

Rao alleged that the police had arrested seven `Dalit' students for
participating in the Telangana agitation four days ago and framed
cases against them under the SC/ST Atrocities (Prevention) Act. He
wanted the government to book the `erring' police officials under the
Act.

Senior saint moots 'Shahi Snan' for dalits in kumbh

Dehradun, Feb 1 : Swami Yatindranand Giri, Mahamandaleswar of Juna
Akhada, has mooted an idea of holding a 'Shahi Snan' for dalits during
Kumbh Mela, which is likely to spark a dispute.

Speaking to mediapersons at Hardwar yesterday, he also put forward a
proposal to allow some nationalist Muslims to perform 'Ganga Pujan' at
Har Ki Paudi though people belonging to religion other than Hinduism
are not encouraged to even enter Har Ki Paudi area.

Swami said he intends to hold a 'Shahi Snan' for dalits during the
mela to promote spirit of equality among all Hindus.

Swami said a campaign would also be launched to promote awareness
about the environment among the public.
