Reservations on Quota at JNU?
By: Vatsala Shrangi Date: 2010-12-30 Place: Delhi

Student associations of Jawahar Lal Nehru University (JNU) are back
demonstrating as the varsity has failed to admit students from the
Other Backward Classes (OBC) category despite a recent court verdict
directing it to do the same. Student leaders with their groups came
out shouting slogans, carrying placards and posters condemning the
university administration.

Over the past three years, progressive sections of the entire JNU
community have been striving for the proper implementation of the
legally mandated OBC reservations in the campus. Yet again students in
the OBC category have been denied admission as against the High Court
verdict, which declared the university admission criteria faulty.

"This is not the way a central university works. It is worse than any
dictatorial institution in the world. There is no authority, no
members in the administration, the VC is on extension. The university
cannot do this to students after the court verdict. This is complete
anarchy; we don't know who is running the university," said Vismay
Bose, Vice-President, All India Students' Association (AISA).

"Should a central university create such an unprecedented situation
wherein every student eligible for admission is forced to move the
courts, fight a long legal battle, and prove once more that JNU is
legally in the wrong?" said a morose Usham Rojio Singh, the student
who successfully moved the Delhi High Court in order to be able to
study in JNU.
Another day in court

Instead of implementing the HC verdict and moving towards modifying
its policy, the JNU administration chose to challenge this verdict in
the High Court. Subsequently, on December 23, 2010, the HC once again
upheld its 7th September verdict and dismissed the JNU review
petition.
"This is a highly dangerous trend, with far-reaching repercussions for
JNU's transparent and democratic decision-making process," said
Sucheta Singh, from Students Federation of India (SFI).
