Corporators from SC/ST wards can cheer

BANGALORE: If all goes well, corporators representing wards reserved
for SC/ST candidates will get more funds.
Perhaps for the first time ever, a separate committee for the welfare
of SC/STs will be set up, headed by corporators elected from the
reserved wards.
On Thursday, a delegation of SC/ST corporators' forum met mayor S K
Nataraj and BBMP commissioner Siddaiah to explain them about the
necessity to create this committee. There are 25 corporators in the
BBMP council who represent SC/ST communities.
They have demanded allocation of more money for their ward from the
fund earmarked for welfare of SC/STs.
P Mallesh, corporator from Subhash Nagar, said his ward alone has 17
slums. The sum of Rs 3 crore allotted for their improvement is not
sufficient. "Rs 292 crore of the SC/ST welfare fund lapsed in 2009-10,
thanks to lack of proper utilization. This year, the budget made
allocation of over Rs 600 crore for the same purpose. But within six
months of this financial year, BBMP will not be able to make use of Rs
900 crore," he said.
