ONGOLE: Dalit leaders of the Karamchedu movement on Saturday vowed to
work for broader unity among the 'bahujans', comprising the SCs, STs,
BCs and minorities, to attain political power.
The leaders, as also families of the victims of six persons killed in
caste clashes on this day 25 years ago, came together and held a
meeting at Karamchedu to mark the Karamchedu dalit martyrs' memorial
anniversary.
They felt happy over the Supreme Court upholding the trial court
verdict, though belatedly, and awarding punishment to the guilty in
2008.
The Karamchedu movement marked the beginning of dalits organising
themselves to assert their rights and fight for social justice.
"We should rise above the level of just putting forth our demands and
fight for political power and realise the vision of Babasaheb Ambedkar
and Jyotirao Phule," the speakers said.
Among others, the memorial meeting was addressed by Thella Jedson,
hailing from a bereaved family, and dalit leaders – Koti James, Duddu
Bhaskara Rao, A Chennaiah and Palanati Sriramulu – of the movement.
It may be recalled that on December 19, 2008, the Supreme Court
awarded life sentence to the main accused and three years of
imprisonment to 29 others in the case.
