Dalit groom forced to alight from horse

TNN, Jul 9, 2010, 12.21am IST

AJMER: A Dalit groom was forced to alight from the horse during his
baraat at Sinodiya village. The groom, who objected to the order of
the youth belonging to another community, was badly beaten up. The
bride's family was shocked over the incident and after the marriage,
mustered enough courage to register a complaint against the culprits.
The matter is under investigation.

According to the complaint lodged by Jathuram Bodhuram Raiger, father
of the bride, during the baraat, some youths interrupted it and asked
the groom to alight from the horse. "When my son-in-law protested and
showed courage to take the baraat on the same road, he was forced to
come down and beaten up badly," he mentioned in the complaint.

Raiger also alleged that Jagdish Jat, Rang Lal, Ramesh Kumar, Suda
Ram, Bhanwar Lal and few others were involved in the incident.

According to sources, the heads of the Dalit community, who witnessed
the ceremony, asked the family to forget the incident and forced not
to register the complain. It was reported that heads of other
communities also put pressure on the bride's family not to register
any complaint.

"It was insulting and against the law. We felt ashamed and sorry to
the family of groom and decided to register the complaint," said
brother of the bride. Sources said that there was also a pressure from
the heads of other communities.

Deputy superintendent of police (Kishangargh range), Pawam Kumar Jain,
said a complaint has been registered under SC/ST Atrocities Act. "We
are investigating the matter and recording the statements of
witnesses."

Four months ago, an incident of Dalit atrocity came to light in Masuda
village when a body of a Dalit was not allowed to cremate in the
village and the family took the corpse to Beawer for last rituals. On
the complaint of Dalit Adhikar Kendra, the National Human Rights
Commission has initiated an inquiry into the matter.
