Intellectual giants coming

KOCHI: The city will soon witness one of the most extravagant literary
fests. The Kochi Art and Letters Foundation is organising Kochi
Letters International Festival (Kochi Life 2010), an annual
international cultural festival, on January 8 and 9. The first of its
kind in Kerala, Kochi Life 2010 will be the first edition of the
international event that will be held every year.

The two-day festival features some of the big names in the literary
and cultural circuits including Slavoj Zizek, Slovenian thinker, who
is visiting Kerala for the first time. Sociologist, postmodern
philosopher and cultural critic, Zizek has been dubbed 'the most
dangerous political philosopher in the West' and is today one of the
most controversial public intellectuals.

The fest has a volatile and pertinent theme - Whither Left? - that
questions the way the Left engages and addresses class, gender and
sexuality.

The fest will have talks and discussions on subjects like 'Themes from
the Left: Value, agency, and alienation', 'Life narratives of women
and Dalits in Left movement', 'Caste and the reconstruction of the
Left', 'Rethinking the language of feminist politics in India,
'Reformism or socialism?', 'There is more to secularism', 'Left
interventions and self reflection in art, literature and academic
writing' and 'Life after secularism'.

There will be an audio-visual demonstration with over 500 photographs
of Sunil Janah by Ram Rahman. Other participants include Gail Omvedt,
Akeel Bilgrami, Prabhat Patnaik, Tejaswini Niranjana, Annapurna
Garimella, Gopal Guru, Javeed Alam, Kumar Shahani, C Ayyappan, T M
Yesudasan, Usha Zacharias, C K Janu and J Devika.

The festival at the Town Hall will be open to the general public and
individuals from domains like art, theatre, music and architecture.
The idea is to upgrade book lovers from the level of consumers to that
of participants in thinking, allowing authors to better understand who
their readers are and what their writing becomes in reception.

The fest offers a platform for a shared public intellectual discourse
with the representation of thinkers from different domains.

This helps publishers realise and improvise their role as active
agents in disseminating ideas to the public. Leading cultural activist
and film maker Sashikumar and noted academic and thinker Dr Nizar
Ahmed are the creative directors of the event.
