Ex-IAS officer floats new political party

CHENNAI: Former senior IAS official P Sivakami who joined the Bahujan
Samaj Party (BSP) before the 2009 Lok Sabha polls, floated her own
political outfit, the 'Samuga Samathuva Padai (SSP),' here on Friday.
Sivakami said that her party would work for the true empowerment of
Dalits and women. The party flag was introduced in the inaugural
function.
SEPARATE PANCHAYATS FOR DALITS SOUGHT: Designating the traditional
habitats of Dalits in villages as separate panchayats with adequate
powers alone could help bring a significant change in the condition of
the Scheduled Caste people, said Samuga Samathuva Padai (SSP)
founder-president P Sivakami here on Friday.
Speaking to reporters after launching her new political party,
Sivakami listed allocation of land, taking education to Dalit
villages, reservation for women, development of basic amenities and
separate Dalit panchayats as five top priorities of her party.
Asked why she quit the BSP, the former bureaucrat said though the
party had good ideologies it was more Uttar Pradesh-centred and almost
dysfunctional in Tamil Nadu.
Dalit settlements are relegated to the last position in any
improvement plan for a village and the result is underdevelopment.
